Granite City man charged with attempted robbery of convenience store

The man arrested Tuesday evening shortly after he allegedly tried to rob a convenience store outside Granite City was charged Wednesday in Madison County.

According to a release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, 20-year-old Eric S. Brown of Granite City walked into Curly’s Corner Market shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday and told the clerk to hand him the keys to another employee’s parked vehicle and all the money in the store. When the clerk said he did not have access to the cash, Brown allegedly placed one hand near his pants pocket and leaned forward, telling the clerk “Do you think this is a joke? Do you want to get shot?”

When several customers entered the store, Brown allegedly told the clerk he was joking and tried to buy some alcohol with a credit card that was declined. The clerk told deputies Brown then left and headed toward the Sunny Shores trailer park. Deputies found him in his home and arrested him. A black pellet gun was found in his pocket.

Brown is still in custody at the Madison County Jail. His bond was set at $80,000.
