New scam claims warrants and fine payment by phone, police say

Police are warning of a new phone scam: claiming a warrant, and demanding money.

Edwardsville police are warning that someone is calling people claiming that he is with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and that there is an outstanding warrant, while demanding payment of a fine. The person is not associated with the sheriff’s department, police said, and is calling from 618-619-8555. That number does not belong to the sheriff’s department either, police said.

“Always exercise caution when someone contacts you and requests payment over the phone,” read the alert from the Edwardsville Police Department.
