Driver of stolen car had loaded gun, police say

Police arrested a 22-year-old felon with a gun Monday afternoon shortly after they allegedly spotted him driving a stolen car at the John DeShields Housing Complex.

The man's identity has not been not released, pending charges. After the suspect was initially spotted driving the stolen white Chrysler 300 at 1:30 p.m., East St. Louis police tried to pull him over. He refused to stop and continued on his way through several stop lights and intersections, police said.

Police said he jumped out of the vehicle in the 400 block of Gray Avenue and ran off. When police caught up to him, he was carrying a coat in one hand and a loaded gun in the other, police said.

A pregnant 16-year-old who was in the car with him slid into the driver's seat and continued driving the car, police said. She crashed into a vehicle in the business corridor at 25th and State streets, and knocked down electrical service in the area, East St. Louis police Chief Jerry Simon said. Police arrested the man and the girl.

"We are holding the male suspect in East St. Louis. The (girl) is being held at the juvenile detention center," Simon said.
