Belleville police arrest man in connection with armed robbery

An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Belleville, police said.

Police were called at 11:48 a.m. Monday to the 200 block of N. Sixth Street in Belleville on a report of an armed robbery, said Master Sgt. Todd Keilbach. The suspect was described as a black male, with a medium build, armed with a black revolver.

The victim told police the suspect, an acquaintance of his, walked up and asked for a cigarette, Keilbach said. As the victim offered one, the suspect pointed a gun at him and stole two cartons of cigarettes, money and cannabis from him. The suspect fled on foot, and the victim was not injured.

Detectives later found the suspect and took him into custody without incident, Keilbach said. They also found a firearm in the area where he was seen fleeing.

Charges have not yet been filed, which is why police did not release the suspect's name. Police plan to file for charges Wednesday.
