Metro-east football team’s game canceled after shooting next to stadium in Chicago

An Edwardsville football team had an unexpectedly tense night when their game was canceled in Chicago on Friday due to a shooting next to the stadium.

The Metro-east Lutheran High School Knights traveled to Chicago over the weekend to play the Hansberry College Prep Academy in Chicago’s South Side, according to KSDK.

Just before kickoff, however, parents told head coach Micah Pomerenke the crowd heard 20 to 30 shots outside the stadium along East 50th Street, KSDK reported.

Three people, none of them from either high school, were shot at about 6:50 p.m., according to Chicago police.

Both teams agreed to cancel the game, KMOV reported.
