Fairview Heights police are looking for thieves who damaged several rooftop air conditioning units in order to steal copper components from them at the Market Place shopping center near Interstate 64 and Illinois 159.

According to Lt. Mike Houget, the suspects climbed up onto the roof of the shopping center anchored by Burlington Coat Factory and stole copper from air conditioning units.

In all, 17 air conditioning units were robbed of copper parts. The stores affected were the Burlington Coat Factory, Best Buy, Shoe Carnival, Golf Galaxy, Citi Trends and David’s Bridal.

Police said the thieves caused $140,000 in losses between damaging the units and stealing the copper, but that estimate included only the units for the Burlington Coat Factory. The damage estimate is likely to increase considerably as the other stores assess the damage to their units, according to police.

Hoguet said police “are still investigating the availability of (security camera footage) of the scene.”

Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact Fairview Heights Police at 618-489-2130.
