The Madison County Coroner on Tuesday identified the 11-year-old boy shot to death Monday evening in Alton as Romell L. Jones.

Coroner Stephen Nonn said Jones was shot once in the chest and was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton.

According to police reports, Jones was among a group of kids playing basketball on Acorn street in the Alton Acres public housing complex when shots were fired from a passing car. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated to investigate the incident.

The shooting happened at about 5:15 p.m. Few other details are available in the immediate aftermath of the crime. But witnesses said they believe the car from which the shots were fired was red.

The shooting prompted the cancellation of a boy’s basketball game Tuesday night between Alton and East St. Louis high schools.
