Two men robbed at gunpoint in East St. Louis

Police are holding three men, whose names were not released, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred early Sunday morning in District 6.

Police received a call about 4:47 a.m. in reference to an armed robbery in the area. East St. Louis Police Capt. Bobby Cole said two individuals were standing outside of a home when a silver Pontiac Grand Prix occupied by four individuals, who police are now calling suspects, approached.

“One of them got out of the vehicle and started talking to the two individuals who were standing in front of a residence there, which makes us think that the victims possibly knew the suspects as people they had seen in the area before,” Cole said.

At least three of the suspects got out of the car, announced a robbery and took some jewelry and other personal items from the two victims. Then, they fled the area, Cole said. Police know that at least two of the suspects displayed weapons.

About 5:30 a.m., East St. Louis police caught the suspects in the Orr-Weathers housing complex.

“Three suspects were taken into custody. One suspect jumped from a window in the vehicle and fled,” Cole said. It is not immediately known whether police were able to recover any weapons.

That suspect remains on the loose. Cole said the police investigation is in its preliminary stages at this point.
