Local teachers up for state Teacher of Year honor

Two teachers in the metro-east are among 10 finalists for the 2017 Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Candace Hamilton, a teacher at Whiteside Middle School, and Matthew Herndon, from Lewis and Clark Junior High School in Wood River-Hartford School District, were named as finalists on Thursday.

The Illinois Teacher of the Year will be named by the Illinois State Board of Education at a banquet in October. The annual program recognized the accomplishments of more than 250 educators, and honors one as the Teacher of the Year. A selection committee of administrators, teachers and past winners and education-related professionals reviewed the nominations.

According to ISBE, the Teacher of the Year will represent the state at NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., and in the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year Program.
