An environmental nonprofit is seeking help to turn a former detention pond into an outdoor classroom for students and native garden for the community.
The site, which used to be called Peterson’s Pond, is located in Belleville along the Signal Hill Bike Path, just south of Signal Hill Park.
It sits between two schools: Signal Hill Elementary School and Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. Project manager Sarah Vogt, of HeartLands Conservancy, said the outdoor classroom will serve students at both schools, which are within walking distance.
HeartLands Conservancy is looking for volunteers to remove invasive species and plant new vegetation at the site over the next few months. Volunteers are needed from 7 to 11 a.m. Aug. 5 and at 8 a.m. Sept. 16 and Oct. 14.
