The Smith family has helped area high school students pay for college in memory of their son since his death in 2010.

Senior Airman Bradley Smith was killed in action while deployed in Afghanistan.

The 24-year-old was raised in Troy. He played on the football team at Triad High School and was an active member of his youth group at Bethel Baptist Church, according to runforbrad.org.

Smith is survived by his wife Tiffany, his daughter Chloe, his parents Gary and Paula Smith and his brother Staff Sgt. Gary Ryan Smith, the website states.

The Bradley R. Smith Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk is in its eighth year raising money for college scholarships. To date, the Smiths have given away more than $200,000 in scholarships.

This year’s 5K is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sept. 9, two days before Bradley Smith’s birthday.

Register online at runforbrad.org. Registration forms downloaded from the website can also be mailed to Bradley R. Smith Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk at P.O. Box 21, Troy, IL 62294.

The deadline to register for $30 and receive a T-shirt is Aug. 21. After Aug. 21, that registration fee will not include a T-shirt.

Registration on the day of the race will cost $35.

The 5K will take place at Tri-Township Park, 410 Wickliffe St. in Troy. Participants are asked to use the Riggin Road entrance.

The scholarships are awarded to Triad High School students; students who plan to pursue a career in the military; students whose parents are active duty military or retired veterans; and students who attend Bethel Baptist Church in Troy.
