20-year-old part of group trying to steal gun is shot dead, Texas police say
CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that police say Hayden Lee Holt was part of a group trying to steal the firearm.
The story is below.
What was supposed to be a gun sale turned into a deadly shootout, Texas police told news outlets.
Selma Police said Hayden Lee Holt, a 20-year-old from San Antonio, was shot to death alongside two other injured people, around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, according to KTSA.
According to police, Holt traveled from San Antonio to Selma with a group to pick up a firearm KTSA reported. But instead of buying or trading for the gun, police say they attempted to steal it.
KENS identified the two injured people as Joseph Harris and Esteban Torres III.
Police said Dorian Jose Camarillo, Robert Alejandro Monreal and Eric Rey Sepeda, all 17, also came with Holt, according to KENS.
Police said Harris said he came to Selma to buy the gun, KENS reported. He reportedly told detectives someone in Holt’s car “pointed a firearm at him” and hit him before he picked up a dropped firearm and shot back.
According to KSAT, the alleged botched gun theft led to a firefight that ended with “over 30 shots being fired,” police said.
The rain of bullets struck surrounding homes and vehicles, the TV station reported, but Selma police said they haven’t found anyone else who was injured.
Selma Police detained those involved at the scene and got warrants charging the suspects with capital murder, according to KSAT.
