I recently accompanied a friend to place flowers on some loved ones’ graves at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Upon arrival, we encountered what seemed to be a funeral procession and had to make a detour.
After further observation, we found this was not a funeral procession after all but a graveside picnic. There were some people laying in the grass listening to loud music while others were perched on headstones consuming chicken and drinking alcoholic beverages.
This was unlike any other ritual I am accustomed to and it left me somewhat confused. After some thought, my friend and I concluded that there are all walks of life and not everyone grieves in the same fashion. And, who knows, maybe these folks were from out of town. Maybe even from as far away as New Orleans.
