Coal and climate

Coal and climate are often thought to be conflicting choices. However, they need not be. Through the use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, coal can be made a low-carbon, climate-friendly fuel.

In this regard, the 22-county Southern Illinois Democratic Chairman’s Association is proud of the leadership shown by Sen. Richard Durbin and Rep. Tammy Duckworth in co-sponsoring legislation in Congress that would significantly increase Federal investment in the development and deployment of CCS — thereby helping coal secure its rightful place in our nation’s energy future.

Sen. Durbin and Rep. Duckworth understand that we can be good environmental stewards and support the full use of Illinois’ abundant coal resources at the same time. They know those need not be either-or choices.

Coal has, for generations, been the economic lifeblood of so many communities across Southern Illinois. With leaders like Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, we believe it can remain so for generations to come.

We commend them both for their support of coal and for their leadership in making it a fuel of the future.
