Historically, when governments have taken on the responsibility of social welfare from cradle to the grave, societies have ended up with a small group of elites (like the Clintons, the Bushes, many people in government all their adult lives). They think we owe it to them at the top, those who own and control everything, a rapidly vanishing middle class, and a greatly expanded independent class. We once fought to rid ourselves of control by an oligarchy. Will we do it again? We have that choice now.
