I am writing in response to a letter in the March 17 paper from William Clark, who is affiliated with the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.
I was one of the two people who wrote about potential mine subsidence and flooding on the property that is being considered for development across from the Shrine on Illinois 15. My letter was based on an article in the BND stating the property was eligible for TIF funding because it is considered blighted.
If Clark is correct and the property is safe for building, with no danger of subsidence, then I guess it is not blighted and should not be eligible for tax increment financing. He can’t have it both ways.
Just out of curiosity, he mentions the Missionary Association building on that property 20 years ago. Is that building still there, or what has happened to it?
