I wish to commend Belleville School District 118, Belle Valley District 119, Belleville East High School, Southwestern Illinois College, the Chamber of Commerce, First Student Bus Co., AmeriCorps and Cathedral School on their unbelievable spring food drive. As one of several Belleville food pantries, we received at least twice what we received in 2014. We were overwhelmed with the generosity of our community.
The students, teachers and staff must have gone all out this year, as the results were astonishing. I commend District 118 Superintendent Matt Klosterman for his vision in starting this project a few years ago. We all need to learn to share and give back to our community. With all the state budget cutbacks and drop in charitable giving nationwide, these gifts come at a great time.
Our food pantry as others in this area will greatly benefit from the hard work of these students. They are learning a valuable lesson in life: that we need to help one another.
