Confused about doctors

I am confused about all the people with “doctor” preceding their name.

When I was in high school, several decades ago, we had no teachers with the title “doctor”. We didn’t even have a school nurse.

The M.D.’s or doctor’s office was across the street. You went to the doctor’s office, or hospital to see them, if you were sick; unlike nowadays.

I am afraid with all these doctors around, in an emergency situation I will wind up in the librarian’s office, or an overpaid chancellor’s office instead of an emergency room.

Although I don’t claim to be the most intelligent person (although I did make the honor roll in school occasionally) I was usually on the toilet roll most of the time, but I am sure they have at least one of these rolls in the doctor’s office.
