The Mississippi Valley Library District holds their meetings at the Main Street Collinsville library. The meeting room was once designated the Karma Wilbert Reading Room since her will designated that $75,000 be donated to the Collinsville Memorial Library. It is in this room that the district board of trustees now conduct the people’s business.
I believe it was disrespectful to stop calling the room in her name as well as holding the meetings in such a small room that cannot accommodate a wheelchair. Further, it is almost certain that it does not meet the fire code.
I spoke at the June 22 district meeting and chastised the trustees for not one of them speaking up about the overcrowded room. Their names are Nancy Gerstenecker, Marie Barron-Johnson, Janet Albertina, Susan Keller, Virginia York, vice president Mark Schusky and president Thomas Wells.
The VP accompanied me out to the parking lot while we discussed the small room. Schusky makes comments on most agenda items. He is a well-educated Unit 10 civics teacher and was city clerk for about two years. With his education, it is difficult for me to understand why he would not speak up about the inadequate meeting room.
