Upcoming presidential debate participants will be chosen by the media and something called the Presidential Debate Commission. If they mark Aug. 6 as the beginning of the campaign for president in the election of 2016, did you or I have any say in selecting the date or in developing this organization?
Those selected will be picked from various polls of likely Republicans and Democrats. Anybody here decide who to poll or what questions to put in the survey? And, have any of us chosen to limit this field to questions and answers to a two- or one-hour format? So much can be learned in time-limited sound bites, eh?
Add in that Illinoisans may participate in the primary, not by choosing any of several candidates, but only the prearranged one in either of the big two parties. There are lots of choices to be made, but with scarce input from regular voters. We don’t get to elect a president; we merely ratify choices some other people have already made.
Whoopee for “representative” democracy.
