Not only do Collinsville taxpayers have to contend with a questionable city council, they also have a library district that is awash in trustee improprieties. It is sad to see what otherwise seemed to be nice people to be disrespectful in their meetings when improvement opportunities are brought to their attention.
President Tom Wells, Vice-President Mark Schusky, Secretary Susan Keller and Treasurer Virginia York along with three others comprise the board. I sat at the end of their table with papers in hand to speak at their July 1 special meeting. Even though I spoke at two previous regular meetings, the president called for a motion to adjourn. I spoke up saying I wanted to speak, and he replied it was not on the agenda. I replied I have the right to speak. Director Barbara Rhodes then interrupted loudly stating “no.”
I mentioned the Open Meetings Act compels public bodies to permit any person an opportunity to address public officials. I fail to understand how the officers and director could take their electronic training during June and not know I had the right to speak on July 1. The online site of the Mississippi Valley Library District board says it meets in the Collinsville Memorial Library Center board room. They use the very small Karma Wilbert Reading Room which is inappropriate for public meetings as well as disrespectful.
