I am a long-term Collinsville resident and also a graduate and student athlete of Collinsville High School. I have been attending athletic events with my own children at the CHS stadium for the last three years.
It is very upsetting that the visitor side bleachers are not handicap accessible. My mother and father-in-law are forced to sit on the opponent’s side of the field during football and soccer competitions. My father-in-law was offered a chair to sit with my mother-in-law on the track but would not be able to see the field due to the players on the sidelines. That would not have allowed us to sit and watch the game together.
We were told by a few people that the school didn’t want to spend the money to put in a couple extra rows to put in a ramp. That is very disturbing that they would put in a million-plus dollar complex and discriminate against the disabled, let alone a taxpayer for Collinsville.
The number of handicap parking spots is also inadequate for the amount of spectators that the stadium can hold. They had to park in the grass and drove over a curb to park close.
I am hoping that this can be remedied in some way so that all of the visitors to CHS have a pleasant experience and do not leave feeling like it was a hassle for them to bring their family members with disabilities.
