The University of Missouri-Columbia has taken steps to assure that doctors at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Columbia no longer have “privileges” at the university’s medical center. What the university bigwigs have in essence done is to assure that no woman will get an abortion at the Columbia clinic, regardless of the financial, medical or other circumstance of her pregnancy.
Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, who chairs the state’s “sanctity of life” committee, raked University of Missouri Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin and other university officials over the proverbial coals at one of the committee’s witch hunt sessions. Loftin et al genuflected to the demands of these radical, science-be-damned Republican politicians and in doing so, assured that women seeking an abortion will have to travel to St. Louis or Kansas City.
The “red meat” fed to committee members (and Missouri’s right-wing bible wavers) at the hearings was a heavily edited video purportedly documenting that Planned Parenthood was selling fetal body parts. Despite self-serving editing by the anti-abortion creators of the video and gross inaccuracies therein, university officials set aside the founding principles of Mizzou’s Medical and Journalism Schools and submitted to the errant demands of socio-political radicals.
