Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk and Democrat Senator Dick Durbin both voted against legislation that would defund sanctuary cities and would impose mandatory minimum prison time for illegal immigrants who are convicted of an aggravated felony, or have three strikes for trying to enter our country illegally.
We have about 340 sanctuary cities whose policies generally prevent local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration officers, allowing those localities to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation. San Francisco is one of these cities.
The bill included a provision known as Kates’ Law, named after Kate Steinle, would impose a mandatory five year minimum prison sentence for illegal immigrants who are convicted of an aggravated felony or have three strikes for trying to enter our country illegally.
Kate Steinle was fatally shot in San Francisco on July 1, by an illegal immigrant who had seven prior felony convictions in the United States and had been deported to Mexico five times. He was released from jail in San Francisco in April 2015 and despite requests from U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement for his release date, they did not notify Immigration and Customs. This person then shot and killed Steinle on July 1, which could have been avoided if this sanctuary city had cooperated with immigration authorities.

Apparently Kirk and Durbin both believe it is more important to protect illegal immigrants than the good law-abiding citizens who pay taxes and their salaries. Short memories make for bad politics. At next election, vote them out!
