Bishop won’t go outside his ‘comfort zone’

My heart goes out to Gay Kavanaugh and others at St. Lawrence Catholic Church who report having been shunned by Belleville Bishop Edward Braxton. (See “Nowhere to Turn,” Jan. 1, Letters to the editor.) It’s tough when the shepherd of the flock acts more like the monarch of the kingdom.

Braxton’s imperious and distant manner has almost become legendary. He rarely responds to parishioners. He refuses to talk with journalists. He won’t go outside his “comfort zone” and certainly won’t even give the time of day to those who might question his judgment or decisions.

Whether it’s child safety, diocesan spending or any other concern, Braxton makes it clear that he is not to be challenged in any way. His is an unhealthy management style that only demoralizes Catholics and endangers youngsters.
