Mr. President, area needs help after flood

Dear Mr. President Barack H. Obama, thank you for your kind words on the occasion of my 86th birthday.

Yes, I am the Greatest Generation, and I do take pride in all I have accomplished in the matters of flood control by working together with others for the good of Madison County.

While the Mississippi River reached its crest in the region on Dec. 31, the greater St. Louis Area is in dire need of federal help.

Please know that my prayers are with the many victims who are now suffering from this dreadful disaster. I know you will do everything possible to bring help to our area, and I know other agencies will work with you on this urgent situation.

I wish a Happy New Year to you and your family.

Helen M. Hawkins, Madison County Board, District 16, Granite City
