Bill Clinton isn’t a saint

Kansas City Star guest BND columnist Mary Sanchez seems enthralled with Bill Clinton and disdainful of Donald Trump.

I’m not a Bill Clinton hater. He’s done some great things for America. Let’s be honest. Unlike Mother Teresa he’s not heading for sainthood anytime soon. He may be the Democratic Party’s “sacred cow” but in today’s American politics no one is beyond reproach.

Sanchez tries to have her cake and eat it too. On one hand she boosts of the former president’s stellar record on “woman’s issues.” Then she warns, “Slick Willie was capable of being unfaithful to his wife.”

As the possible future “First Fella” might say, “That depends on the meaning of ‘capable.’” Ask Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey, Juanita Broaddrick, Dolly Kyle Browning, or most recently Monica Lewinsky. Though married 40 years, Clinton is a well-documented womanizer…or worse.

Sanchez excuses political figures with, “Their public service is distinct from their private lives.” Apparently longtime Missouri House Speaker, John Diehl, didn’t get that memo. He resigned over sexually suggestive text messages shared with a young legislative intern.

Sanchez says, “The more out-gunned the man is intellectually, the viler the putdown you can expect.” Is she pointing her finger at Clinton or Trump? Just ask Monica.

C.S. Lewis said, “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” You just can’t spread integrity unevenly across the “public” and “private” domains. Without integrity what do you have?
