I am writing this letter in support of my good friend and neighbor of 43 years Belleville Township Supervisor Dennis Korte.
There have been comments in this paper claiming Belleville Township Supervisor Dennis Korte to be callous to the concerns of the poor because of the way he responded to a statement at the Township Board Meeting. During a discussion of the budget a trustee said that there are a lot of people who have not seen pay raises in 10 years, much less every year. Supervisor Korte responded, “That’s their problem, not ours.”
It seems clear to me that the meaning was: We should not debate others salaries, over which we have no authority, and we should get back to the topic at hand.” That seems to have been the interpretation at the meeting because the aforementioned trustee responded, “Yeah, well, we’re here to agree on a budget and I don’t agree.” Dennis’ comment got the group back on track - discussing the budget.
There was no lack of caring or respect for poor people in Dennis Korte’s statement. However, some people jumped to conclusions and tarnished the name of a man who has spent years protecting and helping the poor.
Those who know Dennis Korte know that he is a staunch advocate for the poor.
