Lee Pitzer concedes that citizens’ access to firearms was necessary at the time of the drafting of the Constitution due to the conditions that existed during our westward expansion.
I would submit that many of the conditions that warranted the need for self-defense through the possession of a firearm exist today. Case in point, I quote someone I would consider an expert on criminal behavior, that of a convicted criminal interviewed a couple of years ago on NPR. Apart from his own reasons for frequent incarcerations (alcohol abuse and his inability to function without someone imposing structure of his life) he observed that there is a younger criminal element in our midst that revel in their criminality and take great delight in causing pain and suffering even to the point of causing the death of another. In other words, the Wild West is with us again.
