This is in response to the Sound-Off comment in Monday’s BND stating that Eugene Verdu cares only about money, and that he’s getting three pensions from the PSOP. Not only does the person not know what he/she is talking about, they obviously don’t know Gene Verdu!
I worked with Gene as his administrative assistant at PSOP from 1996 until his retirement in 2003, and again from 2007 until 2014 in the St. Clair County Office on Aging, located in the PSOP building. He started both of these wonderful programs, worked tirelessly to secure funding for them (not for himself), and in his spare time, started and still is involved in the Belize Crippled Children’s Program, which brings children from Belize who need orthopedic surgery, to Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis, where they receive their surgery at no cost to them.
Gene is perhaps the most unselfish person and cares the least about money of anyone I know. And by the way, he receives one pension from the State University Retirement System from his 30 years of working at SWIC/PSOP. He receives no retirement from his years of working part-time in the St. Clair County Office on Aging.
