Our readers respond to the week’s news:
Alcohol on SIUE campus
So the moron legislators in the state of Illinois led by Jay Hoffman have a bill to put alcohol on the SIUE campus, for sporting events — other Illinois universities do it right? Why don't we just put a casino in the middle of the campus, maybe we make more money. Open it up to the students, too, and they can squander way all their money and all their parents’ money. I'm sure Illinois will spend it wisely! With thinking like that from our Illinois legislators, is it any wonder the state is bankrupt?

I was wondering what happened to the Gestapo in Germany. Apparently they found their way to the Village Hall in Swansea. With all the rules and regulations, the important ones they missed, like getting rid of all the unauthorized trucks on streets and boats parked in yards, in residential neighborhoods. Do your job, or can you only control grass over 8 inches high?
I see the Illinois budget chief says the second year without a budget deal will be devastating and it should be. I’d like to thank these miserable, corrupt, union controlled, money controlled, creeps in Springfield that sell us out for their union buddies and sell us out for the people that pay them off, the big donators. These people don’t want to cut this budget, they want it to be like it is because they owe the unions. This governor is trying to fix this state and you better let him, before there are no jobs, pensions, services, or even a state to live in anymore. Get these Democrats out of office.
Congratulations to all the law enforcement agencies who participated in chasing, catching and killing the second suspect in the weekend killing of a young woman in St. Louis. His capture and death won’t bring any of the people he killed back. But hopefully will give some solace and closure to the families of those individuals, that he is responsible for killing.
Didn’t think so
When Obama went to Japan and said, “Death fell from the sky and the world was changed,” was he referring to Dec. 7, 1941. when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? I didn’t think so.
No Pearl Harbor stop
I didn’t see President Obama stopping at Pearl Harbor, on his way back from Japan honoring those that were killed in Pearl Harbor to start WWII.
The article on heroin addiction, on the front page, has many striking similarities to alcohol addiction’s effect on the families.
All you Swansea residents, I urge you to read the article in the Swansea report, June 2016, concerning the impact of the changes of the 9-1-1 laws and if anyone can read it and you will see Illinois State government taking away more money from Southern Illinois by changing the fees we pay to our 9-1-1- system that we paid for so long and built so well, so we can help fund the rest of the state. They are going to increase our fees, cut our services so we are in line with everybody else, who don’t pay for those things. If you want this type of action to continue, keep voting for the Democrats, they are the culprits ruining our state.
Waste of taxpayers’ money
No notice for vehicle admissions testing now? Make up your mind. It is a waste of taxpayers’ money, yet I got one in the mail —after I went to the center already. I drive my car 6,000 miles a year. What about the big trucks racing down the interstate? Just politicians lining their pockets again.
Washington Park’s brave citizens
Congratulations and thanks to the people of Washington Park who came forward and said what they had seen and heard when the mad man that ran through their neighborhood had a shootout with the police. It takes guts to come forward and to give an honest description of what you saw and heard when so many people deny cooperation with the police. You are brave and upstanding citizens.
Criminals should pay
They are increasing court fees by $5 for crimes, yet the state is $5 million behind in contributions to the county. Make the fee increase $25 — why should taxpayers pay for this? The criminals should pay.
Short-changed by TIF
The Hofbrauhaus is a $100 million project when completed and will generate $1 million in sales tax revenue, based on the city and the mayor shepherding $38 million. You have to spend $38 million to recoup $1 million in sales tax? That’s if everything is built there. We are getting short-changed by the TIF funds. I’m tired of seeing my taxes go up in the city of Belleville. Contributions to TIF district is higher than what my city taxes are.
The article by Charles Carter, in Mascoutah, talks about taxes and TIFs — 13.8 percent of overall taxes in the county. We recently went to eat at the Olive Garden and had a 10 percent sales tax, in Fairview Heights. Add in the 15 percent tip and you have 25 percent add-on charge over and above the food and service you receive. Look at your tax bill — you are going to find out why Belleville’s taxes are going up. Walmart and Lowe’s get a TIF incentive. Really?
Art Voellinger had a letter to the editor about Southside softball league from years past. I agree, it’s a shame the league is no longer in existence. It brought back great memories. One thing not mentioned, the diamond was never updated until the players themselves rebuilt it. That was right around 1970. And all the credit goes to them.
Legislators are the problem
Michael Madigan’s budget is $7 billion out of balance. Our local legislators, Jay Hoffman, Jerry Costello II, Eddie Lee Jackson, all voted in support of this. Each of you are poor representation for your constituents and the benefit of the state of Illinois. You are the problem. Solve it, don’t perpetuate it.
As low as you can get
This is about the King, Curtis McCall Jr. of Cahokia, arresting a 73-yearr-old veteran on Memorial Day weekend. That is as low as you can get. You just go around kicking small children for fun too? Mayor King, that is low.
Someone tell Pitts
Someone tell columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. that slavery is over. It’s been over for years. Get a life.
Not their friend
All you ever hear from Mike Madigan or John Culerton is that they are standing ground against the governor’s reform agenda to protect the middle-class family. This class is becoming fewer and fewer because Illinois jobs are leaving the state due to taxes and over-regulation that resulted from Madigan and Culerton’s legislation. When are the union members gong to realize the Democrats in this state are not their friend? The only ones benefiting are the politicians themselves.
Kudos to Bost
Kudos to Rep. Mike Bost for keeping up the push for the NGA to locate in Illinois. Hard work shows what kind of a congressman he is. While it is apparent the NGA will never happen, he definitely needs to be reelected.
Don’t blame the vets
I’m complaining as a disabled veteran with the Belleville mayor raising taxes, because of us. I’m looking over my brother’s tax bill — he points out, Mr. Eckert, that you take out too much money for the TIF district. Get rid of the TIF’s, get rid of the raises in taxes. Simple, it has nothing to do with the vets.
