Despite what some inflammatory rhetoric would lead you to believe, banning Muslims and deporting immigrants would not have saved a single life in the horrific mass shooting in Orlando. This fact might be news to Mr. Pete Hill, who wrote a recent letter to the editor wrongly criticizing Sen. Dick Durbin’s calls for common sense gun safety reforms following one the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
Under current federal law, a known or suspected terrorist can walk into a gun shop and walk out with an AR-15 and the FBI cannot block the sale. This, not our country’s immigrants or religions, is a clear threat to our national security.
Mr. Hill also cited Chicago as a case against gun control. In reality, a significant number of the guns used in Chicago crimes are traced back to neighboring Indiana and other locales where gun control laws are much weaker. The reforms Durbin and other Democrats are fighting for would not only help prevent terrorist shootings, they would help curb urban gun violence as well.
I agree with Durbin’s fight for common sense reforms that the overwhelming majority of Americans support.
