What would you say if I told you that Ronald Reagan was responsible for the Orlando attack ? Shocked? Angry ? Well you pretty well have to be over the age of 50 to challenge that idea with any credibility.
In brief, Reagan and his administration were the most free-spending administration of the 20th Century. (Read “Combat — Twelve Years in the US Senate” by Warren Rudman co-sponsor of the Graham-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Act of 1984) . While Reagan spent profusely on his defense idea of “Star Wars” (never used and never needed) he and his advisers looked over other previously necessary federal expenditures.
So, after firing the air traffic controllers and destroying the savings and loan industry, while cutting income tax deductions for the middle class, he then attacked the funding for mental health out-patient services. Doing so released many, many thousands of people, who were receiving mental health assistance and medications into the public and told them to “take care of themselves.”
Of course, most could not.
So, looking back at Orlando, and Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., and dozens and dozens of other with multiple deaths or not, almost all the perpetrators were shown to either have an identified mental illness, or displayed the symptoms of one. These people should have been seeing a therapist or psychiatrists but there was no clear public route to one available. Whose fault was that ? Ronald Reagan. Mental health is the link, not gun ownership.
