In your property tax bill was a pamphlet showing the impact of TIFs on the property taxes we pay in St. Clair County. 13.38 percent ($44 million) of the property taxes we pay are siphoned off to TIFs. This same pie chart shows schools represent 60 percent of the total property taxes we pay. 60 percent of the $44 million TIF funds ($26 million) is being taken from the schools just this year. Over the 10 past years a total of $346 million collected by these TIFs should have gone to our schools. So why do need to pay additional sales tax to cover the money we have already been taxed for the operation of our schools?
We are already paying over a 9-cent sales tax rate in Belleville because of Belleville’s TIF developments. Now they expect us to pay an additional 1-cent sales tax to compensate for their counterfeit economical development plans. Belleville officials have been misleading the public with their delusional economical plans for the city at the expense of our schools and us taxpayers. Belleville’s TIFs are nothing more than a sham that causes our property taxes to go up so the mayor can have his own private slush fund.
I ask readers to save this letter and keep it with future letters that are forthcoming. Future writings will show the need for a school sales tax is nothing more than a deliberate perversion to hide the “screwing over” us taxpayers are receiving from Belleville’s TIFs
