Metro East Bears continue roll toward national tournament

Storm Coffman pitched a six-hit shutout Wednesday to lift the Metro East Bears to a 3-0 win over Rockport (Ind.) in the opening game of the American Legion Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Napoleon, Ohio.

A 2017 graduate of Bunker Hill High School, Coffman struck out five and walked one in a complete-game effort to keep his team in the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

Playing in the regional tournament for the fourth time in the past six years, the Bears (41-8) will next play the winner of a Thursday game between Danville (Ill.) and Beverly/Lowell (Ohio).

The Bears defeated Danville twice last week in winning the state championship in Rantoul.

The tournament will continue throughout the week. The title game is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.
