TURN 2 BASEBALL -- San Diego Padres scout and former McKendree University and Southwestern Illinois College coach Van Smith has joined the Turn 2 Sports Training Facility in Collinsville as one of its pitching instructors. Smith is offering a series of four-week pitching sessions and instruction now through Sept. 26, Sept. 27-Oct. 24 and Nov. 17-Dec. 23 with more lessons possible in January and February. Sessions are available for teams or individual players, fees vary. Turn 2 also is offering a cage ball league Oct. 4 through December and again in January-March for 11-under, 14-under and adult leagues (ages 15-50). COACHING CLINIC -- Former St. Louis University men's basketball coach Brad Soderberg, Washington University coach Mark Edwards and Lebanon (Mo.) High coach Kyle Paulson are among the guest speakers for the annual Fall Basketball Coaching Clinic 6 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Family Sportsplex in Belleville. JUNIOR KAHOKS -- Junior Kahok Basketball Association team tryouts for players in grades 3-6 are being scheduled for boys living in the Unit 10 school district. Tryouts are 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 for grade 3; 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 23 and Sept. 28 for grade 4, 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 and Sept. 30 for grade 5 and 7:30-9 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 for grade 6. O'FALLON YOUTH BASKETBALL -- O'Fallon Parks and Recreation Department accepting registration for its Junior Panther Basketball Camps being held at the Panther Dome at O'Fallon High School. ORCHARDS JUNIOR GOLF -- The Orchards in Belleville will offer a junior golf program that includes an instructional clinic for juniors 5-older on Sundays through Oct. 11. Frierdich is a bicyclist and photographer who was mostly paralyzed after being hit by a vehicle nearly two years ago. RANDY WELLS GOLF CLASSIC -- The inaugural Randy Wells "Striking Our Diabetes" Golf Classic and Dueling Piano Night is 11 a.m. Nov. 6 at St. Clair Country Club in Belleville.
