ST. JAMES WINS --St. James Grade School in Millstadt recently won the Belleville Diocesan baseball championship by defeating St. Teresa of Belleville 7-5 in the championship game. St. James finished the season 16-5. Players were Richie Donald, Zack Skaer, Kole Rakers, Kyle Sweeney, Ben Hankammer, Nick Nieroda, Cody Klotz, Nick Galle, Luke Glaeser, Sam Haudrich, Austin Guttermann, Cal Kossina, Stephen Toenjes and Jordan McFarland. TURN 2 BASEBALL -- San Diego Padres scout and former McKendree University and Southwestern Illinois College coach Van Smith has joined the Turn 2 Sports Training Facility in Collinsville as one of its pitching instructors. Smith is offering a series of four-week pitching sessions and instruction now through Oct. 24 and Nov. 17-Dec. 23 with more lessons possible in January and February. Sessions are available for teams or individual players, fees vary.
