STL City stays hot with shutout of Austin heading into World Cup break
May 23-ST. LOUIS - Don't look now, but St. Louis City is on a roll. Even if you wanted to look now, you won't see anything for almost two months. That's because following Saturday's 3-0 home victory over Austin, STL City began an extended break for the World Cup.
St. Louis extended its unbeaten streak to five matches across all-competitions. In its last five matches including Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup result, STL City is 4-0-1.
With the win, St. Louis leap-frogged over both and Portland in the MLS Western Conference standings and sits in 12th place in the conference with 16 points.
"Good result, amazing afternoon," St. Louis coach Yoann Damet said. "The fans, the noise, the support - all the boxes have been checked. Now it's time to go and refresh."
St. Louis will have nearly two months to reflect on the victory. STL City will return to action following the World Cup break facing Sporting Kansas City July 16 at Energizer Park.
The World Cup begins on June 11 and is being played in the U.S. Mexico and Canada, Canada and Mexico. the MLS will take a break. STL City will take two weeks off and then resume for four weeks of training camp.
Saturday, STL City took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute off an own goal from Austin defender Guilherme Biro, who headed in a cross from City's Tomas Totland.
"You have to have provoke the luck," Damet said. "At the end of the day, you can wait for it or try to provoke it. We have been on the front foot many, many times, today again, in the way we want to attack."
After the second half kickoff, City's Fallou Fall found the back of the net, scoring his his first career MLS goal in the 56th minute. Daniel Edelman added an insurance goal in the 90th minute.
STL Cty outshot Austin 17-10 overall and 6-2 in shots on goal. City goalie Ben Lundt played his second straight game following an injury o roman Burki early in City's U.S. Open Cup game against Houston, won by St. Louis in penalty kicks . Lundt made two saves Saturday against Austin.
"We spoke as well about leading in games and what feeling it gives us," Damet said. "Today is another good example of that, where you're leading and maybe you have a little bit more freedom to go after the second one without feeling that we need to leave some spaces and to take more risk."
