Nolan Schanuel Injury: Angels Make Announcement After First Baseman Leaves Rangers Game
The Los Angeles Angels avoided a major scare on Saturday night, but there are concerns over the fitness of first baseman Nolan Schanuel after he exited the team's game against the Texas Rangers with left calf tightness.
Schanuel was removed after six innings during the Angels' matchup with Texas after appearing uncomfortable while running the bases in the fifth inning. The 24-year-old drove in a run with a double and seemed to pull up as he hustled into second base. He initially remained in the game before being replaced at first base by Vaughn Grissom ahead of the seventh inning.
Angels PR announced on X that Schanuel exited the game because of left calf tightness and is currently being treated as day-to-day. Further evaluation is expected ahead of Sunday's game.

The timing is frustrating for both Schanuel and the Angels, as the young first baseman has continued to establish himself as one of the club's more reliable hitters. Schanuel has posted a batting average around the .250 mark while continuing to provide consistent on-base production near the top of the lineup this season.
Schanuel entered the 2023 MLB Draft as one of the top prospects in the class and was selected by the Angels with the 11th overall pick. He made his major league debut just 40 days later, marking the fastest debut for a position player in 45 years.
His promotion was the quickest for a position player since Brian Milner in 1978. The American has become a key part of the Angels' young core since making his MLB debut in 2023, recording a hit in each of his first 10 career games and setting a franchise record for the longest hitting streak to begin a career.
Despite criticism from some fans regarding his power numbers, Schanuel has remained productive offensively. He has handled four-seam fastballs particularly well this season, batting over .300 against the pitch type while producing strong expected contact numbers.
Schanuel contributed an RBI double before leaving Saturday's game against Texas. His availability moving forward will likely depend on how his calf responds over the next 24 hours.
The Angels are hopeful the injury is minor but are expected to proceed cautiously with one of the organization's most important young players.
