After starting the season with a pair of wins in well played games against quality opponents, the McKendree University Bearcats first road trip of the season didn’t have a happy ending as they fell to Drake Univeristy by a 28-16 score.
And while the non-conference loss won’t have an affect on the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings and the Bercats hopes of a league championship and NCAA Division II playoff bid, it was still the Bearcat’s first setback of the season.
“As far as top 25 rankings in the writers or coaches poll, it might prevent us from being ranked which in turn might hurt us later in the year when the playoffs are announced. But as far as the conference and us reaching our goals like winning the GLVC title, it doesn’t affect. But its still a loss and I don’t like losing,’’ McKendree coach Mike Babcock said. “We got up 10-0 early and just to let that slip. I don’t think any of us, coaches and players, felt that they (Drake) should have run over us the way they did from the start of the second quarter until late in the fourth.
“I think we all felt we should have won that game. We just didn’t execute. We played well for the first quarter and for a little in the fourth quarter, but that was it.”
McKendree looks to get back on the right track on Saturday when it hosts winless William Jewell College (0-3, 0-1) at Leemon Field beginning at 1 p.m.
