Althoff was one of six local boys basketball teams in the top 10 of the latest Associated Press state rankings, with the Crusaders (20-3) holding down the No. 5 slot in the Class 3A state poll.
Althoff was one of three South Seven Conference teams in the 3A Top 10, joined by No. 6 Centralia and No. 8 Carbondale.
East St. Louis (15-6) was eighth in the 4A state rankings while O’Fallon and Alton also received votes. In Class 2A, Nashville (24-2) held strong at No. 2 with Mater Dei (17-8) climbing to seventh after knocking off previously Top 10-ranked Central on Saturday.
That loss helped knock Central out of the Top 10, but the Cougars aren’t far behind at No. 12. Okawville (17-9) was 10th in Class 1A for the second straight week.
On the girls side, Edwardsville (24-0) moved up a spot from fourth to third in the Class 4A state rankings, with Southwestern Conference rival Belleville West also receiving votes in 4A.
Central (22-3) was third in Class 2A and New Athens (24-1) was fifth in Class 1A. New Athens suffered its first loss of the season last week as the Yellow Jackets dropped a game to Centralia Chris Our Rock Lutheran.
