Collinsville bowlers have sights set on earning state berth

O’FALLON Late in the 2009-10 season, the Collinsville Kahoks used a strong performance Frannie Steiner to help win the O’Fallon Panther Classic.

A few weeks later, the senior-dominated Kahoks went on to to win the IHSA Girls State Bowling Tournament.

Earlier this season, the Kahoks won the Panther Classic at St. Clair Bowl for the first time since 2010.

“I hadn’t really thought about it. But I guess the last time we won the Panther Classic was the 2010 season,’’ Collinsville coach Sean Hay said. “And if I remember right, we won it by a fairly large margin.

“We know the shot at St. Clair, but so do a lot of teams. As in any event, it comes down to making the proper adjustments as the day goes on as to which teams do the best.’’

The top team in the Southwestern Conference, Collinsville will compete with 15 other of the teams from Southern Illinois looking to take that final step to the state finals, when they compete in the O’Fallon Sectional at St. Clair Bowl on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Host O’Fallon, along with Belleville East, Mascoutah, Highland, Triad and Waterloo, are also in the field, which will compete for four spots in the IHSA State Bowling Tournament, Feb. 20-21 at Cherry Bowl in Rockford. The top five bowlers not on those four teams also qualify for state.

Both Collinsville and Alton enter play Saturday as regional champions.
