O'Fallon senior Sean Workman won one state championship and came close to a second medal at the IHSA Swimming and Diving Championships at New Trier High School Saturday.
Workman won the 200 yard individual medley event with a final time of 1:49.38, a full 1.53 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Sam Iida, a sophomore from Glenview, whose 1:50.91 time in the finals was just .001 second ahead of Metea Valley senior Jordan O'Brien. Alton's Addison Kaufmann placed 15th in the event with at time of 1:55.48. Peter Byers, a senior from Edwardsville, finished 28th at 1:58.50.
Workman finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a finals time of 50.75, less than a second out of third place. Max St. George, a senior from Wheaton North, posted the winning time of 48.20.
St. George also set a state-record in the event during the preliminary heat with a time of 48.07.
Workman reached the state finals with a dominant performance at the Springfield Sectional Meet. He swam the 200-yard individual medley with a first-place time of 1:48.71. In the 100-yard backstroke event, he defeated Belleville East freshman Logan Theiss with a time of 50.82.
Two others from the metro-east qualified for the state meet via the Springfield Sectional. Jake Gremaud, a senior from Edwardsville, placed 36th in the 100-yard freesyle with a time of 48.27.
Matt Daniels, of Alton, was 31st in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:46.22.
