Super-sectional loss ends careers of Edwardsville's standout seniors
Southwestern Conference coaching rivals Mike Waldo of Edwardsville and Joe Muniz of Belleville West are among four metro east boys basketball coaches who have been honored as Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year award winners for the 2016-17 year.
Also named were Brad Weathers, of Nashville, and Jeremy Shubert of Central. The list was released on Tuesday by the Illinois High School Association.
Waldo led Edwardsville to a Southwestern Conference title and a 30-2 record this past season. Led by Illinois Mr. Basketball, senior Mark Smith, the Tigers were ranked among the top Class 44 teams in the state all year before losing to Chicago Simeon 76-64 at the Normal Super-Sectional.
Muniz led Belleville West to one 20-9 record and the Maroons were 10-4 in the Southwestern Conference. West upset East St. Louis in the title game of the Class 4A Regional before falling to Edwardsvlle in a sectional semifinal.
Shubert and Central jumped to Class 3A this season where it finished 26-5. The Cougars knocked off Civic Memorial in the regional title game before ending their season with a loss to Centralia at the Benton Sectional.
Weathers, who retired from coaching after 31 years earlier this spring, led Nashville to a 20-13 record in 2016-17. The Hornets won a Class 2A regional championship before falling to Alton Marquete 55-48 in the title game of the Nashville Sectional.
