Shooting leads to postponement of game between Flyers, Redbirds

The Southwestern Conference boys basketball game scheduled for tonight between East St. Louis and Alton was postponed due to the death of an Alton student Monday.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated to investigate the apparent shooting of the 11-year-old boy, who was playing basketball with other children on Acorn Street in the Alton Acres public housing complex.

Alton High School Athletic Director Jeff Alderman issued a statement delaying the game.

“Out of respect of the loss of a young Alton School District student’s life, the boys basketball game that was scheduled tonight between East St. Louis and Alton High School at Alton High School has been postponed,” the statement said. “Make-up details will be released at a later date.”
