Which area football teams fell out of the state rankings?

Althoff Crusaders receiver-cornerback Edwyn Brown, shown here earlier this season against Jefferson City (Mo.) Helias, is a key reason his team is 6-0 and ranked first in the state.
Althoff Crusaders receiver-cornerback Edwyn Brown, shown here earlier this season against Jefferson City (Mo.) Helias, is a key reason his team is 6-0 and ranked first in the state.

While two metro-east teams fell out of the Top 10 state football rankings this week, the unbeaten Althoff Crusaders and East St. Louis Flyers maintained a tight grip on their No. 1 rankings.

Althoff (6-0) is ranked first in Class 4A while East St. Louis (6-0), which is coming off a 20-10 Southwestern Conference victory over previously unbeaten Edwardsville, is ranked first in Class 7A. East St. Louis got all 11 first-place votes among Associated Press 7A voters while Althoff garnered 12 of the 14 first-place votes cast in Class 4A.

Edwardsville (5-1), which saw its 30-game conference winning streak end, fell to No. 11 in the Class 8A state rankings. Red Bud (5-1), which also suffered its first loss of the season in a 42-33 Cahokia Conference defeat by Central, was 11th in Class 2A.

Central (6-0) moved up a spot from ninth to eighth in the Class 3A state rankings. The Cougars are at home this week against Class 4A fifth-ranked Columbia (6-0) in another Cahokia Conference clash.

There is also an intriguing All-Mississippi Valley Conference Class 5A state ranking matchup between longtime rivals No. 7 Highland (5-1) and No. 10 Triad (5-1). Highland got some bad news earlier this week with the loss of star running back and linebacker Trent Rakers for the rest of the season with a broken fibula.

Mater Dei (3-3) received enough votes in Class 4A to reach No. 18 in the new rankings.

The other No. 1 teams in the new state rankings are Loyola (6-0) in Class 8A, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (6-0) in 6A, Peoria Central (6-0) in 5A, Immaculate Conception (6-0) in 3A, Downs Tri-Valley (6-0) in 2A and Decatur St. Teresa (6-0) in 1A.
