The St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday placed closer Trevor Rosenthal on the 10-day disabled list and recalled Luke Weaver from Class AAA Memphis.
Rosenthal, who allowed a ninth-inning home run to Xander Bogaerts on Wednesday that was followed by a walk to Mitch Moreland in a 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox, has been diagnosed with right posterior elbow irritation.
Rosenthal typically throws between 95 and 100 mph but was unable to reach those minimum standards before manager Mike Matheny replaced him with Zach Duke.
Rosenthal is 3-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 50 games, with 76 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. He has 11 saves.
