The good news and the bad about Chris Carpenter

The bad news: The Cardinals confirm that Chris Carpenter's oblique muscle is torn, not just strained. That means he's more likely to be out two months instead of the one month that fans and the team were hoping for if the injury was only a strain.

The good news: Redbird rooters can look forward for a second year in a row to hearing the general manager say that the remote possibility a pitcher who has been injured for two seasons will come back, be healthy and be effective is just as good as the team going out and getting some decent, healthy players through trade.

There is no truth to the rumor that Chris Carpenter broke three fingers on his pitching hand while posing for this baseball card.
