The Cardinals wasted several chances to score Thursday night. They had strikeouts with runners at third and less than two outs and double play balls when innings got off to promising starts.
They should have scored six runs but only managed to tally three, all from the bat of Albert Pujols. Fortunately, Chris Carpenter was able to pitch a complete game gem to give the Birds a 3-1 win and a 2-2 series split with the Reds.
Carpenter allowed three hits and was in complete control minus a solo homer hit by Laynce Nix.
Cardinals Star of the game: Carpenter saw his ERA shoot up from 0.51 to 0.70 for the season. But I'm being generous... Ha ha ha ha ha.
Lowlight: Joe Thurston was 0-3 just when it looked like he was working his way out of a slump at the plate.
