Kyle Lohse made his first rehab start Thursday night for Class AA Springfield, allowing a pair of runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Although he described his stuff as "competitive," the Cardinals would like Lohse to make at least one more rehab outting before they reactivate Lohse. After all, he missed basically a month because they tried to bring him back too early after being hit on his arm by a batted ball.
Todd Wellemeyer's performance Thursday night against the giants decreased the Cardinals sense of urgency to bring back their number three starter. With both Wellemeyer and Brad Thompson struggling, Lohse was sorely needed ASAP. But it's better to get him back in top form than to risk having Lohse get hurt again.
